Make plain pastry dough, but not quite so rich as pie crust. Roll out & cut into as many squares as you have apples. Set an apple on each piece; put a little chunk butter, 1 tb sugar and some cinnamon in hole of apple. Fold up dough around apple and prick with fork.
Heat until butter melts – 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tb butter. Add a few shakes of cinnamon & nutmeg if desired. Set dumplings in baking pan and pour syrup around them. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 to-40 minutes, baste with syrup at least once.
